What is it that the FDA says there is NO SAFE level for human consumption?....The answer is "trans fats". From the 4/06 New England Journal of Medicine....A 2% increase in energy intake from trans fatty acids was associated with a 23% increase in the incidence of coronary heart disease". Dietary trans fats lower the ability of blood vessels to dialate(less elasticity can result in hypertension) and they increase HDL (bad cholesterol). Trans fats are found in many baked goods, processed foods and fast foods (esp. fried fast foods). Don't be fooled by the label "Trans Fat Free" as the FDA allows that label in foods containing less than 0.5gm of trans fat/serving... it only takes 2-3 grams of trans fat daily to increase your cardiovascular risk! Check your labels for ingrediants that list any hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. Fast food restaurants often fry or cook their foods in these oils. Did you know that 1 McD's large french fries has 8 gms of trans fat and a typical 3 piece KFC combo meal has 15 gms of trans fat?!!!!! |
