I have had high cholesteral for years and my Dr. convinced me to take a Statin drug to reduce it. The side effects were horrible and I told him I wouldnt take it anymore but would go on an excersize program. This was the same time as our June conf. He said it probably wouldnt work and I would be at the same cholesteral level in 3 months. Low and behold , 3 months later after walking everyday for 1-2 miles, I had reduced it and maintained 60 points. I havnt missed a day since June 2,07.   Bob Lowy

I am always on the lookout for simple messages that people can us to improve their lives.  Sometimes I think that people can get caught up in high profile sports or the exploits from our own youth and think that wellness and fitness can only be achieved by a regimented routine.  Granted, many do need to make some serious changes to right a sinking ship.  But for most, just a few small steps taken in our days lives can make a huge difference in feeling GREAT versus feeling...well, just normal.

Only Walking and Running?

Unfortunately, Nike+iPod only counts walking and running as excercise. I get in a least 4 hours of Tai Chi, an hour or two of hard martial arts, and several hours of japanese sword work each week. Too bad the pedometer gizmo isn't a bit more flexible in its software. Maybe the next version...

Backpacking

Went backpacking last weekend. Alas, it doesn't count toward my walking, as I don't feel comfortable carrying an iPod on the trail. Probably for the best, since we forded several rivers and I fell into at least one!

What is it that the FDA says there is NO SAFE level for human consumption?....The answer is "trans fats". From the 4/06 New England Journal of Medicine....A 2% increase in energy intake from trans fatty acids was associated with a 23% increase in the incidence of coronary heart disease". Dietary trans fats lower the ability of blood vessels to dialate(less elasticity can result in hypertension) and they increase HDL (bad cholesterol). Trans fats are found in many baked goods, processed foods and fast foods (esp. fried fast foods).
